CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | TUESDAY, MAY 12, 2009 Facebook Classroom Management & Projects with Student Cell Phones As a result, educators could take advantage of students interest in Facebook by integrating the tool into learning and teaching studnets how to set up an appropriate profile and post on Facebook without harming their professional futures. In addition, by using Facebook as a learning tool, it gives teachers an opportunity to talk with their students about how to create an appropriate profile and how to "clean up" their profiles so they are appropriate for the teacher or their parents ' to view. You know that they are more likely to be on Facebook than email! -

IGNATIA WEBS | TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 2009 eLearning mash-up follow-up: Articulate presenter and Flash 10 compatibility It was a quick mash-up, but it resulted in a useful combination of tools that simply look cool. Just a quick note : a useful fix for those working with Articulate presenter and are upgrading to the Flash 10 player. couple of months ago I wrote a post about a combination of Articulate presenter, Captivate, Camtasia, social media incorporation and a high definition webcam. But when the Flash 10 player came along, that presentation no longer loaded in my browser. This was due to a swf file that was not correctly decodable by any of the browsers that used the new Flash 10. and Safari 4. -

MLEARNING WORLD | MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2009 mLearning-World Welcomes our Newest Author- Thomas Curtis It was as a result of my personal experiences as a student that I decided that once I had completed my Degree that I would try and return to the education sector to 'give something back' for lack of a better cliche, as I had personally benefited from the range of e-learning tools which enabled me to attain a level of education I had initially dismissed as an irrelevance, if not an impossibility. MOBILE LEARNING | TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2009 Coming Back!!! One of the more exciting discoveries I made when I started here was the use of a tool called Votapedia , which allows teachers to get instant responses from students in the manner of “audience response systems - simply using students’ mobile phones to dial a number and hang up. Hello world! My absence from the edublogosphere (is it still called that? Was it ever called that? MOBILEDOT | MONDAY, MARCH 30, 2009 A mobile learning definition for my Campus cell phone is just the tool needed. A definition …. and a little history I was preparing for a class on mobile learning for the faculty of my campus. Something to get them thinking or started with mobile learning. was adding a PowerPoint slide on the definition of mobile learning from some sources on the Internet. The definition looked good…. It defined mobile learning essentially as distance or e-learning on a mobile device. This simple definition seems to work but how practical is it for my campus? Our I/T infra-structure is very good. Now from a practical standpoint, my definition. -

IGNATIA WEBS | FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2009 Informal learning short-cut: alerts bring your interested parties closer to you With these two free tools I can keep track of what the web (and/or forums) is producing and what could be of interest to me. Tags: tools knowledge knowledge management informal learning Yesterday I twittered that I was looking forward to the release of the Nokia N97. MOBILEDOT | SUNDAY, MARCH 8, 2009 Using Mobile Freebies … continued Twitter is a personal micro-blog service (used by individual or by organizations as a communication and customer service tool) to shared information and communicate with others who are following you. CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2009 Using SMS Texting for Reference Help with Udefn Recently Lisa Nielsen wrote a wonderful post about what Google SMS can do and how the tool could be useful in education. Like Google SMS, Udefn is a SMS text message referencing tool that is free to anyone. Many educators have posted about the benefits of using Google SMS to help students with reference needs such as translation, weather, local information, stocks, currency exchange rates, and more. My only issue with Google SMS is that the "keyword" is set up by Google, and thus you have to remember a vast number of "keywords" to use the service. Again it is a lot to remember. -

MLEARNOPEDIA ON BLOGSPOT | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2009 Déjà Vu This was before the nice drag-and-drop tools of today, so over the summer I created over 200 pages using Notepad. We also need to look to Europe and Asia – and even Africa – for successes using mobile devices as a tool in education. All the current controversy about mobile learning in schools seems very familiar. have been involved in learning using technology since 1979 and heard that microcomputers were a fad, the Internet was nothing but porn, and now how terrible cell phones are. This was after the panic that calculators would destroy mathematics. Our students are as well. -
MLEARNOPEDIA ON BLOGSPOT | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2009 French Mobile Learning Site of Interest Other projects such as short texts which pupils could read before attending class, the presentation of sketches and diagrams, mathematical reminders, recorded messages and videos used in language lessons, can be considered as efficient and well targeted tools which prove to be complementary to school lessons. Philippe Steger just emailed me information about their academic mobile learning initiatives in France. Mobile/cell phones tend to become Personal Assistants. The main interest of this system lies in the fact that it is opened to everyone and it is quite cheap. -
MLEARNING IS GOOD | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2009 Your Assigment: Create Mobile Content Today!! Well, one tool you may reach for is a blog. The blog is a great way to build content fast because most major blogging tools are free, easy to use and offer a powerful set of tools to author content. With all the tools out there these days, it’s become increasingly easy to create content and upload it for all to see and even to subscribe to with rss. So much so that I’ve started incorportating them into my workflows both at school and home/study, and have even written a 2000 word article describing my journey. While its under review for possible publication old-printed-style, I wanted to at least post my conclusions/choices here. That way you can cut right to the chase and start downloading! MLEARNING BLOG | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2009 Downes, serialized RSS feeds and micro learning With this tool, anyone could read a book a page a day or learn a subject little by little. Today I listened to a podcast from Jan 28 in which “E-Learning Einstein Stephen Downes was interviewed on a few subjects. What caught my interest the most was probably his comments on serialized RSS feeds. This is an idea, which has been around for a little while, but which has not really come to life. Funded by the NRC, Downes is helping to develop a system which enables teachers, trainers, students and trainees to create RSS feeds which start only when someone is adding the feed. -
MLEARNING BLOG | MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 2009 Twitter and micro learning Jeanne C Meister wrote an interesting short article about people who use Twitter as a training tool. It it old news, that Twitter is quickly gaining on other large social sites such as Facebook. Since Twitter only allows for 140 characters, it is truly a micro learning experience and can be easily updated -or read- with a mobile phone. One thing which has not been addressed in the article, and which personally worries me most is how Twitter will be able to actually be profitable. Article: [link]. MLEARNING BLOG | SUNDAY, JANUARY 18, 2009 US-study on mobile learning According to Shuler, schools must learn to use the mobile phone as a tool to encourage children to learn more. The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop has released a study which demands a national mobile learning strategy for the USA. The organization was the “mastermind behind the world-famous TV show Sesame Street and now plans to influence mobile learning as much as TV-based learning for young children. It also emphasizes my personal opinion, which is that international standards do not only need to exist, but they must also be enforced by the public. -

THE MOBILE LEARNER | SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 2009 At a Crossroads… A dramatic shift occurred at this time as I met new people and this exposure led to an experimentation in, and then a full adoption of, online tools. How do I unite my love for mobile digital tools, my passion for educating kids and my current role as an administrator? While I will likely shut down that history blog at some point in the near future, I want to continue this one as I believe that mobile learning is the future and conversations around these tools need to continue. CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2009 Business & Economics Classes Can Go Mobile with Projects What Tools Could They Use to Send Out the Mobile Marketing? While most schools probably cannot afford to sign up with Mobile Posse to send out advertisements and marketing coupons, they could use other free web tools that couple with cell phones. Increasingly the business world has been including mobile marketing campaigns. For example, Little Caesars Pizza just ran a mobile marketing campaign where they asked people to text "Crazy" to 269411. This mobile campaign has a global reach, H&M's campaign spans 27 different countries! How are companies delivering their coupons? -
MLEARNING IS GOOD | MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2009 Workers Favoring Mobile Devices Over Laptops However, we don’t really view our mobile devices as an authoring tool. believe we have mobile devices with the horsepower to create solid individual pieces right now, but we need tools to facilitate the creation of rich segments of training that can be uploaded in a sequence to create a whole training package. In the mean time, seeing the growing acceptance on mobile devices to reach out to the cloud and to our corporate tools is very encouraging for mobile learning. Many of us look at our mobile device as a window onto the web, in the same way we look at our PCs. - Best IT Solution For a School?
My issue with this model is that it means these suites are only rarely used for a bit of googling or typing up assignments, not as interactive teaching tools. Walk into any school probably across the western world and you’re likely to find a mix of technologies. Some Desktops, some laptops, some wireless equipment, some handhelds perhaps. Management is deciding now on the IT that the students will use in the new building, as everything will be built from scratch. Currently, the school has one ICT suite per department, each containing about 25-30 PCs. Thin client tablets? - Education and the Twitterverse

MLEARNOPEDIA ON BLOGSPOT | THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2009 CES 2009 Last week I was at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas seeking mobile learning related tools and announcements. There are so many used for this tool in education and training. The biggest mobile news in my opinion was that of the Palm Pre. The demo was very impressive and it should again move the industry, but until we get a chance to put it through its paces we will have to wait. The one thing that we know is that despite the down economy there will be new mobile devices hitting the market, each touting new improvements. For a good overview see Engadget’s review. -

Develop and teach lessons that integrate these tools. I just saw a very interesting report called Ready to Innovate which was sponsored by the Conference Board. The report asks the question, Are Educators and Executives Aligned on the Creative Readiness of the U.S. Workforce? The report surveyed both educators and business leaders about what are important 21st Century skills pertaining to "creativity." am guilty of this myself! What do you think? And what about the issue of standardize testing? -

Imagine being able to send text messages back and forth between yourself and your students, or yourself and your student's parents, or yourself and members of a committee. CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008 Jott is out of Beta.Alternative Speech to Text Free Services Therefore I wanted to compare a few other tools similar to Jott that allow for FREE speech to text translation/messaging services. The bad news is the one of my favorite resources Jott, is out of beta. This means that some of the best features you have to pay for. While it is not expensive, I am not a proponent of asking students or teachers to pay for resources. Dial2Do I am becoming a big fan of this site. It is quick and easy to use. You call in to Dial2Do, tell them what you want to do ("email" "text" "twitter" "reminder") and then speak your message. -
MOBILE COMMONS | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 Rock the Vote Executive Director on Mobile And though text messaging may sound like an unlikely tactic to get Gen Yers to take action (and rather one that’s primarily used as a social communications tool) Rock the Vote’s results are astounding. Jordan just put up a great post on the Convio Connection Cafe about Rock the Vote’s results with text messaging. An excerpt and video are below: Rock the Vote’s Executive Director Heather Smith shared one of the organization’s most effective strategies on a panel earlier this year: fueling the youth movement on the “4th screen” to mobilize youth voters like never before. -

THE MOBILE LEARNER | SUNDAY, JANUARY 4, 2009 Where Are We Headed? Often in this blog, and other education-related blogs that I read, the focus of blog posts is often on the technology tools themselves, why these tools should be incorporated into the classroom to help students learn and how-to’s of accomplishing this tasks. However, sometimes I feel a desire to be philosophical and look at the state of how things really are and where things are going. At this point in time, feeling this way is especially tempting for me as I work with my network to get the Ontario Educator Meetup off the ground. link]. browse the Internet. -
THE MOBILE LEARNER | MONDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2008 Reflections on The First Ontario Educator Meetup digital tools. Many educators who are new to digital spaces often complain that they are overwhelmed by all the content or that they ‘don’t get’ tools like Twitter. I hope that by using a web conferencing tool such as Adobe Connect and encouraging dialogue among members of a network, this space can act as a starting point for educators willing to learn more about social networks and getting involved in a PLN but are unsure about where, how or why to focus their energies on this pursuit. How could we help convert the unconverted? -

MOBILEDOT | TUESDAY, AUGUST 19, 2008 I couldn't have said it better. almost My goal is in my sabbatical to locate software and tools that are open source (preferably) and free for academic use. In the morning news. In this mornings Wall Street Journal - Tech Blog , Ben Worthen did a very good job summarizing what I believe is the direction of mobile application development. There is no clear platform that has won the standards war so Apple (iPhone), Google (Android), RIM (Blackberry) and Microsoft ( Smartphone and Mobile PC) will continue to fight it out. Diversity is good and we can expect the technology to only get better. -
MOBILEDOT | TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2008 My Sabbatical Timeline Any software tools I can develop will only help adoption and use of personal wireless devices As August 18 approaches and the official start of my sabbatical, I thought those reading this blog might be interested in what I hope to accomplish (at a minimum). expect that given the changes that we have seen in the cell phone market regarding applications, much new material will be added and the project will grow. Stayed tuned… much more to co me. The benefit will be to both students and faculty. -
MOBILEDOT | MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2008 Week one complete and a little smarter. site summary has been added and soon I will be asking others to help me in testing some of the tools and applications I have developed. Google think this experience will benefit me and my students as I return to GCC this spring and the plan to use Google Tools across MCCCD. Communication Plan: I have now spent my first week working full time on my sabbatical. It has been a productive week since it has give me the opportunity to concentrate on how I want to disseminate my research and also some boundaries on what projects I want to focus on. It will focus on major events. -
MOBILEDOT | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 Mobile Page Authoring Made Easier for Educators. The best thing about.mobi is its resources and a tool that will test your web pages to see how well they will function on a mobile device and what would need to be done to make the pages "mobile ready". This is the second time I have seen quality open source learning tools come from our friends in the south pacific. The project is essential a tool that works with the FireFox browser to give the web page author a series of iDevices that can add content to a web page. You can have multiple pages and a visual tool tracks the pages built. Below some specifics. -
MOBILEDOT | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 Four steps forward two backward. The Java environment is one that has been in place for some time and offers the mobile app designer a variety of processes and tools for development. Part of this is that I am a more experienced.Net programmer and partly because the.Net development tools are much more robust (more function). T his blog entry is a little later than normal. For the last week and a half, I have been working to clone my.Net GCC Mapz thick client application into a similar version written as a Java MIDlet. When it comes to thick clients, there is no one common mobile app solution (yet!).Net, for CLDC. -
MOBILEDOT | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2008 Google Android To Go. Put with a smartphone , it can be a very powerful tool. A fter a couple of trying weeks with the Java Wireless Toolkit, my spirits have been lifted with Google Andorid. Still Java (probably my favorite programming language), the Android Toolkit with the Eclipse IDE provided a very robust development environment. Not only did it offer superior debug facility but also syntax help at a mouse click (a very important feature when you are using a new programing environment). If your new to the technology, creating a program from scratch is very difficult. -
MOBILEDOT | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2008 Testing 123. T his week was Demonstration Week for my web page tool. had the opportunity to show a couple of people the web pages created by my mobile web page tool. It is important to remind everyone that the goal of this tool is to provide a easy to use web development editor that will create a single web page that will be readable on a PC sized monitor or a mobile display. Normally, a web page designed for a PC will shrink to microscopic size when viewed by browsers loaded on a cell phone. See how it works! This site is maintained by Opera to demonstrate their mobile browser. -
MOBILEDOT | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2008 Catch Up. (ketchup) Using the tool for the pocketCourse project has opened my eyes to some new features that should be helpful. T his week has been catch up on documentation and samples. The pocketCourse project code is essentially done so I have been using MLEX (note name change from MLX to MLEX ). have three pocket course lectures done. need to have completed courses to really test out the concept. think pocketCourse could have some benefits for home bound students or folks overseas (maybe military). am waiting for my new bluetooth usb dongle to arrive from Hong Kong. -
MOBILEDOT | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2008 Introducing pocketCourse beta With there new Java tool, I might have a chance to create a BB version of my GCC Mapz program. T his week I put the finishing touches on the pocketCourse beta. Since I used MLEX to put together the pages, I also made usability improves on that project also. I have more written up on pocketCourse along with a screen cast to show how it works. pocketCourse underwent a few changes from its original design. I also did some work on the color scheme and integrated more icons as opposed to text buttons. The user interface is now very clean and I think functional. -
MOBILEDOT | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2008 Try, try, try again. success! These tools have merit but they do cost $ and they get lost, and they have to be handed out and collected. B luetooth and I have had a troubled start. was able to use built in Bluetooth services for my phone and PC but ran into some problems when I tried to use the Bluetooth serial port communication between two computers. My hope was to establish a client server communication between two devices much like a student might connect to a on campus service with there cell phone. Perseverance prevails. Bluetooth provides the communication link in this simple client server application. -
MOBILEDOT | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2008 What's next With MCLI I hope to create a presentation for a dialogue day workshop to show other faculty how to use my MLEX application and document conversion tools. My hope is that I can get a lot of faculty to use the tool and provide feedback to make it better. A s my sabbatical draws to a close, I have been working on plans to distribute my mobile tech findings. have been working to better publicise what I have built this fall during my sabbatical and also working with MCLI and GCC to set up demonstrations and workshops to show others how to create contents for mobile devices. -
MOBILEDOT | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2008 On the Verge. have finished a beta version of the MLX (mobile learning experiment) tool. have talked about this tool in the blog and on the mobileDot web site. have been also using the tool to prepare some content for my GCC Spring 2009 classes. It is using the tool and more fully testing features (and adding enhancements that have been slowing me down. I have held out on this weeks blog as long as I can and unfortunately I was not able to get everything done that I had planned. If anything, it might prompt some visits to my web site. Decisions. decisions. -
MOBILEDOT | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2008 In the New$. It's the ecomomy ! Have you seen the latest output from the MLX 1 tool that creates one html page that can be viewed on a PC (large screen) or mobile device (small screen)? W ith the economy dominating the new$, it has also impacted the mobile device market. As companies wait to see what consumer spending will look like, announcements on new products and features seemed to have slowed. It is hard to tell what the impact to my project will be except to say that the impacts may not be fully seen until after the election and the holidays. was surprised a the number of options and the pricing. -
MOBILEDOT | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2008 A (thin client) tool is born. To take existing technology tools and software and combine, simplify and integrate. To this end, I have taken the findings of my first three weeks of work on thin clients and created a tool called mLearning Experimental 1. This meets one of my goals which it to have a tool that allows faculty to create a page once and let the student view it from either a PC or mobile device. One of the goals for my sabbatical is not to reinvent the wheel in regards to mobile apps but to make creating content for the average faculty developer, easier. -

THE MOBILE LEARNER | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2008 My Impressions from the 2008 ECOO Conference With the wide variety of multimedia resources and creation tools available on the Internet, the wide variety of hardware that is available in our schools (both school property and property brought to school by the students themselves) and many of these resources available to teachers and students for free, the argument that we need more resources is a weak one in my mind. In addition, please do not interpret my conclusions as a critique of all teachers because I know that there are many teachers who are doing innovating things with the technology tools that they have available. -
THE MOBILE LEARNER | MONDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2008 Evolution of Mobile Communication Cell phones are not longer just tools used for mobile voice communication. THE MOBILE LEARNER | MONDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2008 Cell Phones in Education Part 1: Productivity Therefore, we’ll begin by focusing on tools that all of today’s cell phones have. If adults in the workplace use devices for calculations and we are preparing students for life in the real world as an adult, why do we push older stdents to work without those tools that can help them succeed? These tools are very useful for all students and especially those who need their instruction differentiated due to issues with fine motor skills or other needs. Today’s phones contain productivity tools that help adults stay organized and more productive. -
THE MOBILE LEARNER | MONDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2008 Thoughts on Interactive Gaming He mentioned that while other staff at his school are lukewarm to the idea of bring in a gaming console to encourage physical activity, he finds it to be a useful tool. It appears that this is a new way digital tools are transforming our social relationships and the way we form community. I am going to deviate from my typical topic of conversation to share some experiences, reflections and conversations I have had of late concerning the use of interactive gaming in learning. However, some recent experiences and discussions merit some consideration here. -
MLEARNING IS GOOD | SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2008 Flash Lite on More Mobile Devices Means More Mobile Devices with Rich E-Learning Content What this means is that you can develop full scale mobile applications with the Flash Authoring Tool and deploy them to devices running Windows Mobile. To see an example application that I created, check out my mobile learning tool called Burst. Burst is a demonstration and performance support tool, but if you look at the capabilities of Flash Lite, you can imagine that it could be used to develop several different learning solutions Microsoft is now licensing Flash Lite for Windows Mobile. Burst was built with Flash Lite 2.1, which was the predecessor to FL 3. -
IGNATIA WEBS | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2008 a Dutch audio learning innovation that blew my mind: Vociz he is always looking for easy access language tools. Try out Vociz ! This is one great invention coming from Erwin De Vries , put to my attention by the ever great blogger Willem Karssenberg, aka trendmatcher (in Dutch). Erwin teaches German at the Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium in Groningen. He has developed a Voicemailboard which allows everyone with flash enabled computers to post mp3-messages in a really easy fashion (= no installation, just push record, play back to ensure and send to yourself and the voicerecord keeper to add it to all of the recordings). MOBLEARN | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2006 Great tools for learning about IT What are the tools you can use to Many of the learners on our m-learning projects started as very unconfident users of PCs. MOBLEARN | MONDAY, JULY 2, 2007 Which phones are my students using? We build applications for all sorts of different phones, and despite the hype, many of the development tools and platforms we use are fairly stable: (MMS, SMS, Flash, Flash Lite, C for PPC etc).
