A brief update on Augmented Reality
One technology expert also stated another important point: mobile displays. There are some new technologies coming which should solve that once and for all. Mobile Monday at Zurich was interesting from a mobile learning perspective. Augmented Reality has been on the map for quite a while now, but at the ETH (Zurichs renowned University) we were allowed to have an upclose look at what some companies are doing. Here is a short overview: GBanga – GBanga is a small company which specializes in creating AR games. Unfortunately, this is not yet available for the iPhone.  link].

Mobile E-learning Publishing: iPad, iPhone, or Kindle – Which do iChoose?
We’re exciting with some of the emerging technologies that might allow us to address both of these obstacles in the months to come. While it was enlightening to see Steve Jobs demonstrate what the iPad can do, I found it more interesting to see what the iPad cannot do. Tablet-like in size only, the iPad’s conformity to the iPhone OS, features and ergonomics suggest that we’re seeing Apple promote a renewed focus on empowering crowdsourced content creation over significant platform enhancements—perhaps in a way we have not seen before. What did their “stealth” analysis uncover?

While I'm quite familiar with where mobile has come in the educational space, and our experiences have some nice overlap, the reality is our "world view" is very focused on how businesses seek to leverage mobile technologies to educate, inform and connect their workers, partners and extended business ecosystems. By virtually anyone's take, 2009 was a challenging year for all and especially so wherever new technologies and IT budgets/spending were concerned. So, these pages and all future posts will likely stay in that vein. Knock, Knock!! Who's there? Mobile. Mobile Who?

Using Cell Phones & Google Voice in Foriegn Language
Here are a few Key Takeaways from the article: To pursue a paradigm shift in education with limited finances, schools should consider taking advantage of ubiquitous cell phone technology for pedagogical purposes that square with best practices within appropriate disciplines. My co-instructor Jeff Stanzler sent me this Educause article about a Spanish teacher who started using Google Voice with his students for oral language activities. Students who record their voices in computer language labs or using cell phones become more engaged and invested in those potentially public recordings.

They also put my feet back on the ground: technology is an instrument connected to an economic class, it is the instrument of humans, and it is up to all of us to choose what we do with it. Technology enables those networks, but does not build or nourish them. The big question for December 2009 was: “What did you learn about learning in 2009”. Well, just one very simple, yet essential thing: to open up and embrace sharing knowledge. 2009 was a very chaotic year for my blogging reflections. just did not know where I was going and I had an existential blogging crisis.

Although durability is featured as a word in a lot of these projects, it is not really a long-term strategy, as it does not imply new technologies will be used, or new innovations will be tested. So who does benefit from using new technologies and innovations, if not the learners for whom they are constructed or produced? In a lot of cases funding will be given to high-profile projects with the latest technologies featuring computers and smartphones. Therefore, as we move forward on our classroom designs to create more inclusive environments and a increased student choice in learning, let not forget the power technology has to enable those who learn differently to learn and express their learning in new and unique ways that technology generally, and cell phones specifically, can allow. Just imagine it. Students are outside of their classroom on a field study. During the field study, they see something that really captures the essence of what they are learning. It could be a leaf on a plant during a biology field study.

It’s interesting to see the same view coming from the developed country of Australia. ’ A lot of us are still thinking this is just a mobile phone and a mobile phone is for talking and this should not be in class.

The various projects — all outstanding examples of using mobile technologies to reach people-in-need using the ICT in their hands — are described in the article MXit put to some good use (The Times, 14 June 2009). MXit, the popular mobile instant messaging (MIM) service, is being used by Marlon Parker and his crew in Cape Town to offer chat support on topics of drug abuse, rape, child abuse and debt management. Innovation for Africa — strategies from UNICEF
The report Innovation for Africa by the team from UNICEF’s Division of Communication is their strategy for using web and mobile-based technologies to facilitate communication in Africa and around the world. For the past two years, UNICEF and partners have been exploring ways to use existing technology to improve our programmes and provide innovative solutions to organizational needs. Innovation” is usually equated with “hi-tech.” Sometimes, however, the best innovation involves working with what already is, rather than developing something entirely new.

Day 3 of Go Mobile! mlearning summit in Zambia
Each country has it’s own particular needs, is at a different rung on the technology adoption ladder. The last day of the Go Mobile! Using Mobile Learning to Teach 21st Century Skills summit in Lusaka was about reflecting on what had been learned, what is wanted, what are the challenges and the way forward in Zambia. What have you learned? On the first day the delegates did not think much of mlearning: they basically saw cellphones as a nuisance to education. The lack of access to ICTs is a major stumbling block. “A mobile phone can be used for distance learning.&#.

It's Good Business! Mobile Web2.0 Tools Should be Free For Educators
As an educator and former technology coordinator, I know that for many schools it is unrealistic to expect them to be able to pay (consistently--year after year) for access to the web2.0 Over the last five years of researching web2.0 tools that couple with cell phones, I have found many tools that I LOVE, but they cost money to use. At the same time I understand that most of these companies that create the tools are in business to make money. Especially sites that do not advertise (which schools like), need some way to stay afloat. Therefore, here is my proposal to these companies.

    What I believe about learning
I am currently working towards achieving the highest level of technology in teaching recognition that my employer (Education Queensland) awards. Known as the ‘Digital Pedagogy License, Advanced’, it forms part of the worlds best practice in this area ‘ Smart Classrooms framework ‘ The main thrust of the preparation work I am doing for the license is not about sounding off about learning theories, or naming the tools I use, but about real, practical ways that I believe and KNOW technology is improving and transforming my ability to lead learning.

    Mobile Phones vs. Computers
I have been reading through a number of articles on the Educational Technology Debate (ETD) website.  The articles have been focusing on a debate over which form of ICT technology will provide the best and most cost-effective impact on the education of children in underdeveloped or developing countries.  The key assumption in this entire debate is the acceptance that ICT helps students learn and that a one-to-one ratio of technology per child is the ideal.  Does it make sense to hang on to a technology that is on the outgoing end of the technology curve?

They can contribute to class online discussions while eating lunch or access their readings before class, using the technology they already have with them: their laptop, netbook, or other wi-fi capable mobile device. For mobile learning - and even for flexible learning - at any educational institution, equipping formal and informal learning spaces (such as social spaces) with fundamental enabling technologies like wireless internet access has to be at the top of the priority list.  If students can get together at a campus cafe or in a refectory to work together, they will.

For those with limited time, just go to the last ‘ethics and quality’ part of the post. For this workshop John suggested that we use the Delphi technique to get the most out of both the participants and all the available knowledge in the room. The technique demands a lot of dynamic (re)thinking within the groups.

    The freedom of mobile broadband
One of the latest developments in mobile phone technology is mobile broadband. This has taken off within the last year or so, and has developed at an amazing rate. Even when the first mobile broadband packages came out, they were seen as revolutionary, because for the first time, people were not confined to either home broadband or if out and about, wireless hotspots. Mobile broadband works by getting something called a ‘dongle’, which you just plug into one of the USB ports of your laptop, PDA or desktop computer. It really is as easy as that.
