MOBLEARN | THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2013 AR in mobile learning Several companies (including my own) have been investing heavily to push this sort of technology out of the labs, and into the mainstream. Are you using Augmented Reality in your mobile learning? Should you? AR, or Augmented Reality has been high on the hype-charts for several years now, but seems to be on "slow burn" when it comes to m-learning. This post is a quick update on what's happening, where, and what it means for education. You don't even need to superimpose it on the camera view if you don't want to. But for now, lets stick with live-view AR. lot, as it turns out! -
IGNATIA WEBS | THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2013 #Mobile phones to help women empower themselves #gender The technology has some affordances that can be improved for specific populations, addressing specific issues. In the last years my focus was moving more towards mobile content then mobile design. But indeed as Ronda Zelezny-Green mentioned in her blogpost , the user design can make the difference in getting people, and specifically women increasingly into mobile use for learning. In the case of Ronda, she points towards the Jokko initiative , tackling literacy. But indeed, there are other groups that might benefit from simplified, design specific mobile phones. -

IGNATIA WEBS | MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2013 Academic #publishing, openness and #books altogether Gladly sharing the abstract: While industries such as music, newspapers, film and publishing have seen radical changes in their business models and practices as a direct result of new technologies, higher education has so far resisted the wholesale changes we have seen elsewhere. Every aspect of scholarly practice is seeing changes effected by the adoption and possibilities of new technologies. With this new calendar year dawning, I am set to get my first eBook out there in the open. Maybe run a Kickstarter campaign for each new book. But that’s just me dreaming. And to be honest. -

It’s crucial that organizations embrace this way of communicating via text by creating or using technology that can respond flexibly to natural language. At Mobile Commons, we’ve analyzed tens of millions of messages, opt-ins, opt-outs, and help requests. We’ve learned time and again that people communicate via text messages in a colloquial, familiar manner. Even when they’re texting with a large organization, users respond like it’s a friend. MLEARNING TRENDS | MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2012 My 2012 Enterprise mLearning Predictions Recap The reasons will be plentiful but largely driven by better/cheaper/more ubiquitous technologies and everyone’s acceptance of the fact we all use our phones (tablets, et al) to improve both personal and business communications and to be more productive. agree the technologies to create, deploy and manage HTML5-based mobile web apps will greatly improve in 2012 but I don't feel they will mature to the point they can replace all native apps – at least in most of the primary enterprise use cases for learning that’s managed and tracked. Here’s the analysis of how it all played out. -

THE MOBILE LEARNER | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2012 Some Thoughts Around ‘Digital Bombardment’ It was a mammoth undertaking I am sure but one I found successful as it used communication technology to demonstrate the power of communication technology as staff listened to two speakers talking about the power of communication technology. The two speakers, Ian Jukes and Will Richardson, both discussed how education systems in general, and schools in particular, need to do things differently because of the nature of new technology and how it’s transforming society as a whole. UPSIDE LEARNING | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2012 Learning On Tablets At Emirates Airlines Most companies are quite cagey about how they are using tablets and related technology for learning; to be honest, I don’t see why, but that is another matter altogether. It can be quite hard to find examples of tablets being leveraged for performance and learning in the public domain. Emirates is using tablets coupled with custom developed applications as performance support tools for crew-members. Quite interesting to see an actual EPSS that works on a tablet. The rollout involves about 1000 devices. Mobile Learning eLearning On Tablets Learning on Tablets -

Wouldn’t it be great to ensure my medical records travel with me? Or, the doctors could learn about the number of flu outbreaks in their region – each week? Healthcare is no different. IGNATIA WEBS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2012 Blogphilosophy: Education makes the world a worse place But I can tell you what does not get all of us walking the pavements, hammering on doors of our so called democratic elected leaders: technologically strong, educated armies blowing children to oblivion. These last few days were pushing the truth into my face again: education does not change the world. In fact: it helps destroying it. So why bother? Why do I put so much time and effort in researching education? It is not about Israël, it could just as easily be North Korea, China, Zimbabwe, waffles baking Belgium, … or the tiny country of Andorra for all I care. It will never do it. -

During the Learning Day at the European Environmental Agency (EEA), an organisation filled with knowledge workers, I had the pleasure of hearing a keynote of Harold Jarche ( @hjarche and www.jarche.com ). MOBILE COMMONS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2012 Occupy SMS Connects Families in Need with On-the-Ground Volunteers They’re using mobile technology to connect people in need with the people who want to help. One of the most inspiring sites following Sandy’s devastation has been the thousands of people volunteering in the cleanup. In the wake of the storm’s destruction, New Yorkers are coming together to help their communities recover. But there’s still a lot more work to be done. And it can be a challenge to match volunteers with resources to the families who need them. So Mobile Commons is proud to partner with OccupySMS. But this dichotomy (which in my mind will become obsolete once technology allows us all to get full access no matter where or when via personal devices; which by that time will not even be called mobile, just learning devices at most). The American Pew research center publishes a wide variety of human research topics. Overall a nice read and food for thought. more hybrid world is likely. -

IGNATIA WEBS | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2012 South African #mLearning projects and calls for collaboration The University of Pretoria invited me to exchange some notes on mobile learning and innovative educational technologies and the meet up was simply amazing. El-Marie Mostert and Linda Venter are experts in eLearning and using new technologies in a University setting. As I was down there I was amazed by the technology already being embedded in daily live: e-Tags that scan your car for highway toll calculation (a chip that sits on the window shield, and opens the gate as your car approaches the toll booth). UPSIDE LEARNING | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2012 The Four Stages of Mobile Maturity One interesting aspect I’ve noticed from my research is that organizations move on an evolutionary path as they mature in their adoption of mobile technologies that impact learning significantly. Broadly, I think there are four stages that an organization that starts to leverage mobile technology will go through. Take this with a pinch of salt, lots of things differ and there are probably a hundred other factors that probably influence the adoption of technology and its leverage within an organization. Keeping it simple –. Stage 1 – Infancy. Stage 3 – Youth. -

MOBILE COMMONS | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2012 By The Numbers: Statistics on Mobile Marketing For Political Campaigns There’s no better theater to see the changing landscape of technology than a presidential campaign. We’ve all seen the statistics about how ubiquitous mobile phones are. 91% of Americans have a cell phone within 24/7 reach. 99% of text messages are opened. But how do these statistics play out in the real world? Campaigns spend literally billions of dollars in an effort to capture the hearts and minds of the electorate.
