Athabasca University in Canada hosted the conference last year, and this year they are in the news for a pilot project using mobile learning to teach english grammar on their phones. Excellent news! It is a great subject area, because the learners are often very motivated, and there are ways of supporting language learning via all sorts of media | CELL PHONES IN LEARNING AUGUST 30, 2011 iVoted new Free SMS polling In addition one can respond to the polls via email, sms text, twitter, or the web. I have recently been using a resource called iVoted. It is for live polling, similiar to Polleverywhere, LetsGoVote and SMSpoll. iVoted has a free package (up to 25 votes per poll with unlimited polls). The polls must be multiple choice, but they are very easy to generate. | | | | | | | MOBILE COMMONS SEPTEMBER 4, 2009 Shedd Aquarium Drives Oceans of Awareness with SMS SMS CAMPAIGN DELIVERS OVER 300% MORE CONVERSIONS THAN URLS IN TELEVISION ADS. The Shedd team wanted to test the overall effectiveness and consumer preferences of different marketing tactics, specifically the Web versus SMS text messaging. Shedd selected the mCommons™ platform from Mobile Commons to manage the SMS text messaging campaign and measure conversion rates. CHALLENGE. | CELL PHONES IN LEARNING MARCH 26, 2012 Create an Email address for your phone! The email turns into an sms message that you receive on your phone. mailbliss sms textmessagingThere is an interesting web2.0 site called Mailbliss , which allows anyone to create an email address for their phone. Why is this beneficial? Well, once you create an email address for your phone, anyone can use that email address to send you a text message! This allows people who do not have text messaging (or limited text messaging) to send text messages back and forth without having to pay extra. It is very easy to use and incredibly convenient. It is 100% free and very easy to use. | CELL PHONES IN LEARNING DECEMBER 22, 2011 ClassPager for SMS and Polling Students! It also allows you to set up sms polls (they can be free text polls). am really enjoying using a new resource called ClassPager. It is 100% free! It allows teachers to create class alerts with no limit on the number of students (or parents). Additionally, it is private. There are a lot of teacher controls over student accounts and yet it does allow for anonymity. classpager metropcs | MLEARNING JANUARY 9, 2008 Create a free SMS auto-reply learning tool I’ve previously blogged about StudyTXT , a system deployed at a number of New Zealand educational institutions (to whom it is available for free), which allows students to send an SMS and receive on-demand learning and support information on their mobile phones. It’s possible for us to set up customised SMS-response systems by working with a telecommunications services provider, but this can be a pricey or time-consuming exercise. Jane’s teacher uses an SMS reply system to provide a weekly summary of ten key terms or concepts learned during that week. | | | | | | | | | -
MLEARNING TRENDS | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2010 mLearning Content Types - Level 2: SMS Campaigns Standard Level 2 Content Types & Methods The most common use case for interactive messaging functionality in mlearning is the delivery of mobile surveys and tests via SMS. In either case, once the CellCast Server receives a texted keyword from a registered user account – specifically the user’s phone number as embedded in their SMS message – the interactive message campaign is automatically launched and sends the first question in the series to the recipient. This process continues until all defined questions have been delivered and responded to. MORE >> -
CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2009 Using SMS Texting for Reference Help with Udefn Many educators have posted about the benefits of using Google SMS to help students with reference needs such as translation, weather, local information, stocks, currency exchange rates, and more. Recently Lisa Nielsen wrote a wonderful post about what Google SMS can do and how the tool could be useful in education. My only issue with Google SMS is that the "keyword" is set up by Google, and thus you have to remember a vast number of "keywords" to use the service. Also, Google SMS does not allow you to create your own feed for text referencing. Check those out here. MORE >> -
CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2008 Free SMS Polling Tool For UK and Australia A new mobile polling tool has just been introduced called SMSpoll. SMSpoll is similiar to the fantastic Polleverywhere (which I believe is US only right now). SMSpoll has a free account which allows for 25 votes per poll (enough for many individual classes) and 500 new polls per month. While the purpose is to take advantage of student owned cell phones for the 20% who do not have cell phones, they can vote on the web. The polls can also be downloaded into PowerPoint and embeded into a website/wiki/blog. You can also download the results in an excel spreadsheet. What will Happen? MORE >> -

MOBLEARN | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2007 mobile assessment? We have had a lot of interest from schools and HE recently about using mobile quizzes, and mediaBoards for assessment. In fact, I was taken a bit by surprise by the eagerness of different practitioners to assess learner skills - though in hindsight I guess it makes sense. Assessing learners and learning with technology is both a complex and a rewarding process. There are many examples of rather MORE >>
