CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | SUNDAY, JULY 8, 2007 TXT'ing the Library.a new way of reference It is about libraries starting to take advantage of students' interest in text messaging by providing a library reference service through text messaging. An interesting article came across my email from a colleague of mine in literacy. This is currently being done in Australia, and the nice feature is that the librarians use email to communicate with the text messages since they are more comfortable with email and it is often easier to type quickly. But students can text from anywhere when they need a reference or have a question. It may help lessen the digital divide. -

CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2009 Using Cell Phones & Google Voice in Foreign Language New Internet SMS and messaging services are proving especially useful to language teachers, turning the focus away from the particulars of language and writing and toward whole language oral output and pronunciation, even at the beginner level. My co-instructor Jeff Stanzler sent me this Educause article about a Spanish teacher who started using Google Voice with his students for oral language activities. While I have been talking about the potential benefits of Google Voice and foreign language, this is the first time I have really seen it put into practice. googlevoice -
CELL PHONES IN LEARNING | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2, 2010 Send Group Text, Email, And Audio Phone Messages to Students or Parents With One Click for Free! This is by far one of the best messaging services I have come across. I recently came across the site SendGM , which is set up to send mass group messages (and receive replies) to cell phones (both text and audio) as well as email accounts at the same time! It is an incredibly easy site to use. Teachers can sign up for a free account, add their contact's preferences (e.g. text, phone call, or email), and then schedule a mass message to be sent at a particular time, and select if they want the recipients to reply or respond to the message. MOBILE COMMONS | TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2011 Experian Report: Mobile is the Best Way to Reach Consumers According to a recent report by Experian Marketing Services, mobile is the most effective means of initiating dialogue with consumers: “Consumers are becoming more amenable to mobile marketing and advertising,” said Bill Tancer, San Francisco-based general manager of global research for Experian Marketing Services. If you want consumers to respond to your messages, you’ve got to go mobile. Marketers should recognize that in today’s digital mobile age, mobile marketing is a two-way communication and both directions need equal consideration.”. And the number’s only getting bigger! -
MLEARNING WORLD | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2008 Cloud Computing: money and mobilty Google, Amazon,Mac etc online storage options reaching the many gigabytes now, many users may not even need much more now than a cheap usb drive and internet connection - all the rest is supplied as a service. Cloud computing then (also called utility computing) foresees that supplying this service will eventually look much like the other utility service providers we take for granted - such as power, electricity and water. by Jonathan Nalder mLearnxyz.net So what does mobile learning have to do with ‘cloud computing’? And just what is ‘cloud computing’? What’s with that? -
MLEARNING WORLD | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2008 Cloud Computing and mobility Part 2. In part one we looked at how computing may just become a service utility in the same sense as electricity or water, and be accessible anywhere via wireless technologies. This kind of service combined with Google Docs (and similar online ‘Office’-like suites) offering of free online use of productivity and business software, means that the ability to leave behind expensive and over powerful computers for sleek and accessible devices is becoming a possibility for many. Not accessible on a desktop PC you can’t lug anywhere. But is this what we see happening around us? learing+2.0 -

MLEARNING WORLD | MONDAY, JULY 21, 2008 Is Your Training in the Red or in the Green? Do you pay for janitorial services? For those folks who know me, they know I am the farthest thing from an 'environmentalist' and you sure don't want to know my views on Global Warming. With that said, however, I am very much an advocate of conservation, both of resources and of budgets. Have you ever thought how much your company spends to educate employees? Sure, you have your budgets for your trainers, for those who supervise trainers, and the extra time employees spend going to training, however, there are many more costs to consider. What about the time spent training your trainers? -
MLEARNING WORLD | TUESDAY, JULY 22, 2008 Three Great iPhone Tips Courtesy of eWeek Capture iPhone Screenshots As product reviewers, we at eWEEK Labs find frequent occasion to grab screen shots in order to illustrate the software and services we cover. The PrtScn key is our pal, but not every screen we wish to capture rides on a keyboard-toting device. We've resorted at times to photographing device displays, but those pictures tend to turn out poorly. In previous iPhone tests, we hacked the device to install a screen shot application, of which there were a handful in the unofficial software channels. firmware includes a built-in screen capture function. learing+2.0 -
MLEARNING WORLD | MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008 New mobile platform arrives: Android Because Google itself has no interest in desktop computers, Android devices currently link in directly with online services rather than syncing with a home computer as every other mobile OS has always done. Perhaps forward thinking education departments need to start planning a cloud-computing based model for getting out content and services to its students. By Jonathan Nalder of www.mLearnxyz.net As most geeks would know, the Google-developed mobile OS known as Android had its public unveiling last week. What does this mean for education? There’s a few interesting years ahead! -

MLEARNING IS GOOD | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2010 How m-Learning Can Effect Net Neutrality The worry is that the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will apply the lessons learned from the wired Internet (i.e. they just provide all access at a standard price and speed, but they could make more money if they had multiple tiered systems like they do for cable television) to the mobile and wireless Internet and the services that go along with that. As I stated earlier, learning content comes in all sorts of forms and sorting those forms out from other forms of content would be extremely difficult service providers. -

MLEARNING | THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 2006 Three New “R’s”: Building Blocks of M-Learning | Mobile Learning Moblogging refers to the ability to send a MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service – a message containing media content such as images, video or sound) to an email or web address or telephone number, and have the content automatically and instantly displayed on a web page. This includes things like references, databases, e-books, and documents or media stored on either the mobile device itself, or a remote service such as on the Internet. And it’s quite cost-effective: using the standard (not economy or premium) service level, SMS messages cost about 8 cents each to send out, and messages arrived at Australian phones almost instantaneously, despite the service being based overseas.
