Apple Mobile Learning Roadshow
I attended the Apple Mobile Learning Roadshow last week, held at Sydney’s Maritime Museum; and I know other M-Learning bloggers will be interested to hear about this event. Some of the new apps have helped overcome the shortcomings of the original devices, such as adding advanced recording (and uploading) capabilities to the iPod Touch , and improving the capability of these mobile devices to support constructivist pedagogies.
It was attended by well over 150 people, and a glance over the name badges indicated that most attendees were from the higher education sector.

Google Goggles will rock m-learning.
Back in 2006, I made some predictions about where mobile learning might be heading, including the use of augmented reality or “Heads Up” data displays to provide information on a learner’s environment and allow learning “in situ,”. Augmented reality has recently really taken off during 2009, with a number of apps on various GPS-enabled mobile phones (notably the iPhone) providing information layered over a camera view of the world; one example of this is the Layar application.
I also predicted the use of image recognition that would effectively

New Study on Student Mobile Phone Usage in Other Countries
John Evans , a wonderful technology educator from Canada, sent me the study Children's Use of Mobile Phones: An International Comparison . Published by GSM Association and the Mobile Society Research Institute within NTT DOCOMO in February 2009. The document is over 60+ pages long, but I wanted to summarize one of the interesting finds; the number of students who own and use mobile phones. % of 12 year olds with a They studied children ages 9-18 in Korea, Japan, India, Mexico, and China.

You are Never Alone communicate and collaborate in an online world Skip navigation About « Digital Diversity: ACEC2010 in Melbourne Blog Action Day 09 - Climate Change » Mobile phones - powerful learning aids? This concept is certainly not new, but an article I saw earlier this week has prompted me to revisit it. In 2008 education researchers at The University of Nottingham said they believe it is time that phone bans were reassessed — because mobile phones can be a powerful learning aid.

Mobile Phones vs. Computers
Some articles argue in favour of computers while others argue in favour of mobile phones.
The key assumption in this entire debate is the acceptance that ICT helps students learn and that a one-to-one ratio of technology per child is the ideal. The articles that argue in favour of computers seem to focus on the fact that even low end computers have computational and media capabilities that far surpass mobile phones, especially the older and limited capability models that are found in underdeveloped countries. I have been reading through a number of articles on the Educational Technology Debate (ETD) website .

Mobile Phone Video Challenge...Film on the Fly
Yesterday I ran across a twitter post by Hall Davidson about a very interesting mobile phone video challenge sponsored by a local PBS station in California called Film on the Fly . On February 2nd, 2009 the contest will send out a text message challenge (story) to anyone who signs up and ask them to create a mobile video of the topic in 20 hours or less! Since many students I myself cannot wait to participate and SEE the results! Of course this contest has me thinking about how classroom teachers could do this with their own students.

The graduate seminar (Call4Action) focuses on how mobile phones and other devices are being used around the world for activism. According to MobileActive, this is the first graduate course to be offered on the benefits of mobile phones for activist organizations. How can mobile networked devices be used for social change, politics, and expression? I just read an interesting post on MobileActive. It mentioned a new graduate course/seminar being offered at MIT.
