Mobile E-learning Publishing: iPad, iPhone, or Kindle – Which do iChoose?
Here at Oregon State University, as we’ve contemplated porting our text- and image-based publications into an e-book format, the complicating factors have not generally revolved around issues of user preference or medium maturity (we know our users would enjoy more video- and image-based content and that the majority of our users have adequate bandwidth and hardware), but rather gatekeeping and format. Based on the iPad’s content delivery model, it is clear that Apple and other mobile device manufacturers are seeking to expand their role as content gatekeepers. While it was enlightening to see Steve Jobs demonstrate what the iPad can do, I found it more interesting to see what the iPad cannot do.

The Mobile Learning Engine (MLE) for Moodle
Here at the University of Canberra, I’ve been investigating one particular extension for the University’s new Moodle-based learning environment: the free and open source Mobile Learning Engine (MLE) .
By contrast, different handsets designed by different manufacturers each have their own web browser which implements bookmarks in different ways, making it very difficult to train a user in how to bookmark a Moodle page as the process is specific to their device.
One recent interesting development in mobile learning has been the creation of mobile interfaces for Online Learning Environments.

Are Apps the Future of Mobile Learning?
This task is made more complicated because of the variety of mobile devices that learners within organizations may have, whereas manufacturers like Apple can target only the devices they create.
If the devices are standardized, organizations can create their own app stores and leverage the app stores of the manufacturers they choose to go with. OR , knowing that mobile workforces As a developer, you constantly look for the “next big thing”. Most of us will probably admit that there can be more than one of those “big things”.

Cell Phones in Education Part 2: Assistive Technology
Connecting back to a previous blog post where I was musing on the difference between Differentiated Instruction and Universal Design for Learning , we can see that today’s cell phones are adding more functionality and are designed with the spirit of Universal Design in mind. More and more cell phone manufacturers including RIM and Palm are 0pening up their own app store with free and paid apps to personalize and extend the potential uses of their hardware. There is baggage that comes with the term “assistive technology” as the use of this term often generates certain stereotypes.

Digital Education: AFT Ruffles Mobile Learning Advocates
So you might expect them to get a bit ruffled when someone suggests that cellphones and other small, wireless electronics have no place in the classroom. But Elliot Soloway, a professor of computer science and education at the University of Michigan, was outraged by a statement by Janet Bass in this New York Times article . In reference to a study of cellphones potential for student learning, paid for by a cell chip manufacturer, she said it "is almost laughable that the cellphone industry is pushing a study showing that cellphones will make kids smarter."
