As one Google guy I spoke with recently said, “everyone is thinking about mobile.” 8221; And that is a really good thing for mobile learning. One of the best signs for those who make learning content is the Flash Player finally coming to mobile devices in large numbers. Some of you may be All the money and concentrated brain power of some of the most innovative and powerful companies will certainly yield some great results in the form of new software, hardware and cloud based applications to enable our productivity and creativity.

The Mobile Learning Engine (MLE) for Moodle
One recent interesting development in mobile learning has been the creation of mobile interfaces for Online Learning Environments. Here at the University of Canberra, I’ve been investigating one particular extension for the University’s new Moodle-based learning environment: the free and open source Mobile Learning Engine (MLE) .
MLE provides a mobile interface to Moodle It features a custom Java application, capable of running on the majority of contemporary mobile phones. Some testing on different handsets shows

Are Apps the Future of Mobile Learning?
As I continually survey the mobile technology landscape, I try to predict what learning will look like in 1, 2 or 5 years. In a much more casual way, I also try to observe how people use their mobile devices and what applications they have on those devices.
We know that casual games are a huge hit and some of them are considered learning titles. As a developer, you constantly look for the “next big thing”. Most of us will probably admit that there can be more than one of those “big things”.

M-Learning Decisions: Web App or Native App?
I’ve written a couple of posts about the differences and the advantages and disadvantages of native applications and web applications when it comes to mobile learning. And as the field of mobile platforms continues to get more competitive, we will see some platforms gain strength and some lose strength. But one thing seems to be clear and that’s the fact that mobile browsers are getting much Check out these previous posts on Apps for the future and Google vs Apple to see where I was coming from. Some experts see consolidation among platforms (ex.

Cell Phones in Education Part 2: Assistive Technology
Connecting back to a previous blog post where I was musing on the difference between Differentiated Instruction and Universal Design for Learning , we can see that today’s cell phones are adding more functionality and are designed with the spirit of Universal Design in mind. Piggybacking on traditional “assistive technology” software that allowed those with physical disabilities or those with learning disabilities dictate thoughts onto a computer screen when using pencil and paper was impossible or impractical, voice notes features allow anyone to use their voice to

Google Goggles will rock m-learning.
Back in 2006, I made some predictions about where mobile learning might be heading, including the use of augmented reality or “Heads Up” data displays to provide information on a learner’s environment and allow learning “in situ,”. Augmented reality has recently really taken off during 2009, with a number of apps on various GPS-enabled mobile phones (notably the iPhone) providing information layered over a camera view of the world; one example of this is the Layar application.
I also predicted the use of image recognition that would
