Trawling through my feeds across various social media, I’ve been noticing a spurt in the number of discussions around the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) movement. Some organizations have embraced it with open arms while many are still apprehensive about security risks that BYOD poses. Regardless of whether it’s a pre-class micro-course (5 -10 min) or a post class follow-up in the form of summaries, scenarios that help learner apply some of what they learnt; quizzes (you can even track scores if you wish), mobile devices work perfectly well. Mobiles are excellent devices to help retrieve information like ‘how to’ manuals or videos, or simply search for answers on Google or the company’s intranet which in itself is fast turning into a social environment. I’ve stayed away from the whole discussion on the social side of mobile learning because it is so emotionally charged.  I figured that by posting ideas on how mobile devices can help students learn, it would encourage, rather than discourage, readers that the mobile devices we use everyday in our mobile lives have a place in classrooms too. As shown in Figure 1 below, we classify these possibilities into the five different classes of learning content and focus much of our R&D efforts into how we can help our customers and partners to leverage each type to broaden the learning experiences for their targeted mobile audiences. For most organizations, the ability to contact a person either through a phone call, an email or a text message remains the principal use case for equipping a manager, salesperson or field technician with a company-supplied device.
