I had the honour of meeting one of the Global VPs at TATA today, and getting a small insight into the extraordinary power of the Indian market for technology.

The future is mobile, but will it be participatory or proprietary?

In short, it’ll allow the mobile network operators and handset manufacturers to better understand their customers. To answer this question, I shared my technology experiences from the education, e-government and developmental sectors and offered suggestions for engaging low-income markets through participatory media. Déjà Vu
Earlier I had gotten the comment that there was no need to connect with the outside world, as our faculty from business and from manufacturing didn’t even communicate. All the current controversy about mobile learning in schools seems very familiar. This was after the panic that calculators would destroy mathematics. Our students are as well.

The only thing we can really say is that we’ve integrated so many components onto the chip (including the power amplifiers), that manufacturers can shave up to 75 cents off the bill-of-material costs. Combo chips make it cheaper and easier for handset manufacturers to add the wireless technologies that make such features possible.
