Check out these previous posts on Apps for the future and Google vs Apple to see where I was coming from. I’ve written a couple of posts about the differences and the advantages and disadvantages of native applications and web applications when it comes to mobile learning. And as the field of mobile platforms continues to get more competitive, we will see some platforms gain strength and some lose strength. Some experts see consolidation among platforms (ex. Palm may join with another company to gain strength), and some people see even more platforms emerging. | MLEARNING IS GOOD JANUARY 14, 2009 Children and Mobile Learning Based on this report, it seems that those future adult learners will be much more acclimated to mobility and m-learning than the current generation of corporate learners (i.e. This is a pretty in-depth report from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center on m-learning with children. Pockets of Potential Report. Most of my attention has gone to corporate and adult mobile learning over the years, but looking through this report I can see a lot of similarities with k-12 mobile learning. And of course, the children of today are the adult learners of tomorrow. digital natives vs. digital immigrants). | | | | | | | MLEARNING IS GOOD OCTOBER 5, 2009 M-Learning Goes Corporate and Succeeds Results from their internal surveys indicate that learners liked the new mobile training modality and they plan to offer more of it in the future. As an advocate for corporate mobile learning, I’m always encouraged when I hear about a company that takes it seriously. Here’s a link to an article in Training Magazine where they discuss the mobile learning program at Accenture. | MLEARNING IS GOOD FEBRUARY 4, 2009 Are Apps the Future of Mobile Learning? I don’t think we will abandon our current model in favor of app stores, but I see a role for app stores in our future. In the future, educational and training institutions like Harvard Business Publishing may create their own app stores for mobile learning. As a developer, you constantly look for the “next big thing. Most of us will probably admit that there can be more than one of those “big things. Nevertheless, it’s tempting to look for one technology and try to become good at it so you keep your skill set up to date with the latest technologies. | MLEARNING IS GOOD JULY 28, 2009 M-Learning: Google vs Apple as Web Apps square off against Native Apps Google is betting that Web-based applications that use the strength of networks and servers will be the future of mobile content consumption. Google and Apple appear to have different outlooks on mobile application development, and those differences will certainly have an impact on how we consume mobile content. But both companies overlap in certain places. | MLEARNING IS GOOD AUGUST 25, 2009 Location is the next big thing, how will m-learning take advantage? Just think about how you may use location as a teacher or trainer in the future. I keep reading and hearing more and more about how location and location based services will be the the next big wave in mobility. Many devices already come equipped with GPS antennas and others are able to approximate the user’s current location through triangulation (measuring distance by calculating signal strength from multiple cell towers or WiFi hot spots). Let’s focus on how we can use location in our training and education. One example that comes to mind is MIT Environmental detectives. | | | | | | | | | -
MLEARNING IS GOOD | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009 Mobile Landscape Really About to Change At this time, Palm’s future doesn’t look so good even with their new WebOS, but they could also find a savior in Android, or they could find a way to make their device a major player in other ways. There’s been a big stir of comments, reviews, predictions etc. surroungding the release of the newest Android device in the US. The Motorola Droid was released a few weeks back on the Verizon network and so far the reviews and comments have been pretty positive. Anyway, the recent release of a Android 2.0 As a developer, this second issue is really pretty important. MORE >> -
MLEARNING IS GOOD | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2009 Does m-Learning’s Future hold this Kind of Marketplace? I was reading Chris Dawson’s post on zdnet and it got me thinking. He posted about a new service called eduFire where educators can focus on teaching, and students can sign up for inexpensive courses on a wide variety of topics. The topics at eduFire are only limited by the subjects that people are willing to teach about. Basically, if you want to teach a topic, you teach that topic and you decide how much to charge for that course. The idea of a mobile learning marketplace is exciting for me. am just starting to think about the potential of a market like that. MORE >> -
MLEARNING IS GOOD | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2009 The Apps Argument Revisited This is kind of a short post, but In an earlier post , I asked the question “Are Apps the future of Mobile Learning?. Well Judy Breck added another layer to this over at Golden Swamps in her list of 7 suggestions she’s offering to mobile designers. Judy opines on the value of apps as the mobile learning space matures in her 2nd suggestion. “2. Don’t make long haul commitments inside of walled gardens. An app is a potted plant. Realize the app will either one day move into the internet or it will eventually be euthanized like Encarta.. MORE >> -

I’ve been doing some research for a paper I’m writing on mobile learning for distribution within my company. MLEARNING IS GOOD | THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2009 Mobile Learning Study Shows High Acceptance of M-Learning Among Students Habits in the developing world can be a leading indicator toward the trends we will have here in the US in the near future. Table from the Study - EFFECTIVENESS OF MOBILE LEARNING IN DISTANCE EDUCATION. came across this study in one of my web searches and I was pleseantly surprised because it’s an actual research report and not just another technological opinion piece that infers that mobile will be “big (no offense to anyone who writes about that, I do it too). This study shows that students want mobile learning, we just have to provide it. MORE >>
