Over the past week, our country has seen two historic events – the Northeast being battered by the Atlantic’s largest storm in history, and Obama’s reelection as president of the United States. The recent Con Ed union lockout was massive in scale, involving over 8,500 workers from Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers Union of America. As the company and the union struggled to come to terms on a new contract, Local 1-2 faced the challenge of keeping all those workers informed and engaged – and they used mobile to help them do it. Web links directed recipients to more information – enabling people to jump straight from the texts to the resources they needed.

Connecting people to local events is a great example of how mobile is making it easier for every person to have a voice in the political process. In 2009, the passing of California’s Proposition 8, which prohibited same-sex couples from marrying, ignited a storm of protest across the state. We were incredibly proud to be mentioned in the list – along with such organizations as NationBuilder (which allows leaders to organize communities of supporters) and Eventbrite (which helps organizations set up and manage events.). Buzzfeed just published an article listing seven “under the hood” technologies, including Mobile Commons, that are transforming politics. The thrust of the article is that big social media names like Facebook and Twitter, while hugely important to 2012 campaigns, aren’t the most important technology of this election cycle.
