The Question Of Why (Not) eLearning On iPads Or Tablets?
Pictures from my session on “eLearning on iPads (tablets)” at the recent Learning Technologies event in London. 2012 saw the re-emergence of ‘Mobile learning’ or ‘mLearning’ as “new” (ok, not really new) buzzwords in L&D and Training circles around the world. But largely in the wrong context! Mobile Learning is being loosely attributed to any learning activity that is not location bound, which is very surprising! And even more surprising is, more often than not, it is not even referring to mLearning at all! Certainly not mobile learning in my opinion. Adoption of mLearning.

In 2009, the passing of California’s Proposition 8, which prohibited same-sex couples from marrying, ignited a storm of protest across the state. There were large rallies across San Francisco and Los Angeles. But what about those people in less urban areas who wanted to get involved? Credo’s first step was a mobile campaign that allowed people to text in their location and receive back details on the nearest rally. Go to “compose SMS”.

Top 7 Myths Of Mobile Learning
Sure some ‘learning’ can be delivered on mobile phones especially when spacing learning events/interventions or as part of a blended program – one of the three ways in which mobile devices can broadly be used in workplace learning. When it comes to mobile learning myths and misconceptions abound. The mlearning domain is still new to many, so this confusion is to be expected. These myths are holding back widespread adoption of mobile learning in the workplace. Here is a list of the more common ones I come across. It’s just elearning on the phone.

Voto Latino Drives Voter Registration (and Voting) over SMS
Voto Latino asked members in New York and Texas to sign up to help register voters at the concert events. Sometimes the best way to reach out to people is to have your members do it for you. That’s the idea behind a recent Voto Latino campaign that used text to engage its members in a voting registration drive. Members on the Voto Latino mobile list received a text asking them to take the May Day Pledge: to sign up one new voter in the first week of May. They could pledge by texting back POWER, or through a web link helpfully provided in the original message.

Direct Message Makes It Easy To Text Individual Subscribers
Or, if you’re running an event, you may want to coordinate many moving parts from one centralized location. Back in ancient times, before there was text messaging, organizations had trouble making their outreach both broad enough to reach a wide audience and personal enough to be relevant to any single recipient. But the dawn of the age of texting dissolved that contradiction. Text Text messaging lets you get the right information to the right person at the right time, whether you’re sending millions of texts or just a handful. Hit send, and voilà – personalization.

Text IRENE to 877877 to report hurricane damages
You can check out the map at the Irene Recover Map site and text in to report events in your own area. While preparing our own homes for hurricane Irene, Mobile Commons is also working to keep other New Yorkers safe. Yesterday, we developed a mobile database to help residents find out if they were in a flood zone or not. By texting PREPARE to 30644 , residents can learn if they are in a flood zone or if they must evacuate. Today, we are partnering with the New York Office of Emergency Management ,  Ushahidi and WNYC to use mobile technology to track the storm’s effect on the city.
