Tin Can: learner #analytics for the next #research frontier
As I am researching learner interactions in a mobile accessible open, online course – I can see that access pushes forward learner interactions, and even meaningful, constructive learner interactions (research snippets will be shared soon, still getting my thesis together). What if you are looking for an easy, accessible learner analytics that does not only map access and timings, but actually allows trainers and teachers to take a more in-depth look into the actual learning? THAT is what I am looking for. Tin Can builds on SCORM, but takes learning/training data to the next level.

Blogphilosophy: Education makes the world a worse place
They are educated in surviving, constructing mind weaves to make them and others think violence is permitted, they understand how to fire guns pointed away from their homes. These last few days were pushing the truth into my face again: education does not change the world. In fact: it helps destroying it. So why bother? Why do I put so much time and effort in researching education? It is not about Israël, it could just as easily be North Korea, China, Zimbabwe, waffles baking Belgium, … or the tiny country of Andorra for all I care. Annihilating the powerless and educating the thinking.

And now, there’s a mini version – it really is that simple. Yes you might want to know its not just mini, it’s super thin and only slightly heavier than most phones. This in itself makes it an important entrant in the tablet world where half the point is portability. WHAT ABOUT EDUCATION? So, yes, iPad is big in education.

A big part of setting up an open, online course (e.g. MOOC), or gearing up for a Personal Learning Network (PLN) is the selection of meaning social media tools. In order to get an overview of the big families in social media, I started to make a list for my own comprehension and future selection. added some examples to each group, but those are just the ones that immediately came to mind. Noam Chomsky on the purpose of #education via #LWF
So behind any significant use of technology, there needs to be a well constructed apparatus. Across time there have always been people who's voice was sounding louder than the voices of others. Simply because they have/had a solid opinion based on vision and strong arguments. And apart from the fact that you can always agree or disagree, listening and reflecting on ideas of outspoken, well-argumented people always brings you to the next level of understanding. One of these voices in the past 50 years has been Noam Chomsky. In this 21 minute video you can hear his opinion on education.

Constructing knowledge in times of despair Coping with what life throws at us is often linked to eLearning. We learn for many reasons and most of the time we can plan what and when to learn, but sometimes we need to assimilate more knowledge than we had anticipated in a much shorter time span. This was what happened to me last week. At first I did not want to share any of these experiences, but then I remembered the dictum ‘the personal is political’ and as such I reminded myself that silence never helped anyone. Learning should be an active, dynamic and engaging process in which learners construct new ideas or concepts based on new, current and past knowledge. In the past several weeks I have attended several functions in which the speakers talked about their experiences in college. For example, one individual who retired at age 55 talked about his experience going back to university to get a degree that would help him in a new endeavor. But what do we mean by engagement or engaging learning?

The ethics of research in low resource areas
So who does benefit from using new technologies and innovations, if not the learners for whom they are constructed or produced? Focusing on a winning article by medical colleague Rafael Van den Bergh (PhD student at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp and VUB), I will focus on the ethical part of innovation for eLearning projects. While I was following a course on international issues in distance education at Athabasca University, the discussion on 'innovative projects' was already touched by a couple of students and Barbara Spronk who facilitated and moderated the course.

Blogphilosophy rethinking educational methodologies: is constructivism indeed a solution for all regions?
So my opinion is changing from a constructivist promoter to a belief that if DE is formed, constructed and implemented by tutors or knowledge persons within a community, DE can be more indigenous and better fitting the needs and believes of that community. The last couple of weeks I have been following a module of a Master in Distance Education at Athabasca University. This particular module focuses on the International issues that arise while developing distance education for different regions around the globe. So I have been learning a lot lately, but consequently blogposted less.

Blogphilosophy: does the international eLearning we provide make the world a poorer place?
But when that education is not constructed locally or with locally build technology, it makes learners and/or learner providers dependant on outside manufacturers, non-local educational methods and knowledge. Jonathan Gosier who currently lives in Kampala, Uganda has just published a post on singularities of globalization and convergeance. In his post he says that "Increasingly, people the world over share the same cultural moments. The Presidential Inauguration of U.S.A. but due to increasingly global nature of everything about us." It would give people the power to gather knowledge, not only that but they would construct knowledge and it would be taken up. This will be more of a grim post. Blogphilosophy: informal learning brings us closer to the geniuses of all ages
Informal learning has been an important self-constructing force throughout the ages. But now it turns global and into a democratic form of learning. A (very) quick tour: Leonardo da Vinci is a great example of a human that was instructed as a painter, but through his ideal location (a city filled with artists and knowledge) and the need for travel (sometimes voluntary, sometimes political need), the exchange with other artists (peers) from other regions and the fact that he was able to talk with people from different trades moulded him into a genius. Let's move closer to our era.

With informal learning you look at/find static knowledge and you construct your own knowledge in a dynamic way. Let me take you on a quest for learning affordance s and on a loop in which I will suggest that future informal learning will not differ from 19 th century teacher top-down learning. Two topics which I find are a bit intertwined or at least connected. Anol (author of Soulsoup ) wrote an excellent blogpost on guidelines for effective corporate elearning. It shook my knowledge tree and got me thinking. And as time passes and I read more, those questions only become louder.

Open call for international mobile film festival!
The project competition is really considering the cell phone to be a device of knowledge construction! The 4th edition of the Pocket Films Festival will take place at the Pompidou Center, Paris, on June, 13-14-15th 2008. Currently they have an "open call" for international films created with mobile phones. This is an opportunity for students to develop films for class using their cell phones and receive some internalization recognition for their work. There are two competitions, one for films shot entirely with cell phones, the other for films created for the cell phone or iPod.

Where do we begin? How about with a "how to" book?
Darren Draper just left a comment and question on my blog about how and where do we begin demonstrating the knowledge construction capabilities of cell phones? propose that we begin in many places (Classroom 2.0, K12 Online Conference, Edubloggers) but also with a book.actually my book (I know, a little self-promotion) that I am finishing with ISTE, our goal is to have it published before the NECC conference this coming June. The book is tentatively called Toys To Tools: Connecting Student Cell Phones To Education In and Out of the Classroom.
